Advanced Mountain Dulcimer Tunes, I

$88.00

(To help folks know exactly what each class covers, I updated this page on Tuesday, November 4, to include detailed lesson plans. Scroll all the way down for the newly added demo video.)

This repertoire class is for players who are ready for upper-level arrangements and techniques. I’ve got some great tunes to share, and I’ll be sure to cover the techniques required to play them well. We’ll work on strumming, flat-picking, and a little fingerpicking.

These are online workshops via Zoom. You’ll get a meeting link and handouts by email shortly before the first session.

Notice the Roman numeral “I” in the title? I often offer the same class again—with all-new music. For example, Advanced Mountain Dulcimer TunesII or III. That way, you keep strengthening your core techniques without repeating the same tunes every time.

Bring: DAD-tuned dulcimer · Capo

You’ll Get: Video recordings of each class · Sheet music

What We’ll Do Each Week

Week 1 – Wednesday, Nov 12 — 11:30–12:30 Central Time (USA) / 12:30–1:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • Review of ESSENTIAL right-hand strumming and picking techniques.

  • “Drowsy Maggie,” one of my favorite Irish Reels. Playing this requires clean left-hand fingering whether the melody is hanging out on the melody string or going across the strings. Requires strumming AND picking. I learned this from David Schnaufer, but an arrangement of this did turn up in a very old edition of the Dulcimer Players News Magazine. We’ll take it all in! I expect it will change your playing for the better as it did mine.

Week 2 – Wednesday, Nov 19 — 11:30–12:30 Central Time (USA) / 12:30–1:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • “Blackberry Blossom,” capo 3. Bluegrass musicians all have their versions of this. Not only is it a great old tune, but it will force you to get your technique together. Expect a real workout for the fretting fingers.

No Class – Wednesday, Nov 26 — Happy Thanksgiving!

Week 3 – Wednesday, Dec 3 — 11:30–12:30 Central Time (USA) / 12:30–1:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • Review of ESSENTIAL right-hand finger-picking techniques.

  • Learn a number of finger-style blues arrangements I’ve put together.

  • Add left and right-hand muting for a more authentic sound.

Week 4 – Wednesday, Dec 10 — 11:30–12:30 Central Time (USA) / 12:30–1:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • Review of ESSENTIAL right-hand flat-picking technique.

  • Learn my versions of “Wayfaring Stranger.”
