Stephen Seifert: I Remember What It Was Like to Be a Beginner
(Friday, Session 5, Level 1 - Absolute Beginner, Mountain Dulcimer) 18MD110

This class is for absolute beginners who want a calm, encouraging start on the mountain dulcimer. We’ll focus on the basics that really matter early on: holding the instrument, simple left-hand movement, right-hand technique, and making clean, musical sounds right away. I’ll share common beginner challenges, what actually helps, and what doesn’t need to be worried about yet. This is a supportive hour designed to help you start well and feel confident moving forward.

You’ll receive the full video recording of this workshop, with ongoing access so you can revisit it anytime.

One-Hour Lesson Plan

0:00–0:05 — Position the instrument for accessibility and comfort. Hold the pick for accurate, varied strumming.

0:05–0:15 — A strum method that works for just about everything. Three ways to use the fingers of the left hand, and when to use each approach, with plenty of examples.

0:15–0:45 — Guided practice using three main ways to learn a tune: watching hands, reading music (tablature), and learning by ear. Everyone is better at one of these, but everyone needs all three. We’ll work on one tune from each angle.

0:45–0:59 — A second simple but useful short tune, along with practice tips to use after the class.

(Saturday, Session 4, Level 5 - Advanced, Mountain Dulcimer) 18MD510

This two-hour advanced workshop is for players who want a more flexible way to navigate the fingerboard. You’ll receive the full video recording of this workshop, with ongoing access so you can revisit it anytime.

1:10–1:15 — Quick break.

1:15–1:40 — Learn the scales that sit directly on top of the chord shapes and arpeggios.
