Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer - Pick-Strum Jam Favorites, I

$88.00

(To help folks know exactly what each class covers, I updated this page on Tuesday, November 4, to include detailed lesson plans. Scroll all the way down for the newly added demo video.)

We’ll take reliable jam tunes and use them to build interesting pick-strum arrangements. Develop better right-hand control, and a sound that’s a beautiful blend of picking and strumming. You’ll see exactly how to place a melody across the strings. Expect plenty of examples. This is FUN!

These are online workshops via Zoom. You’ll get a meeting link and handouts by email shortly before the first session.

Notice the Roman numeral “I” in the title? I often offer the same class again—with all-new music. For example, Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer – Pick-Strum Jam Favorites II or III. That way, you keep strengthening your core techniques without repeating the same tunes every time.

You’ll Get: Video recordings of each class · Sheet music

Bring: DAD-tuned dulcimer

What We’ll Do Each Week

Week 1 – Tuesday, Nov 11 — 1:30–2:30 Central Time (USA) / 2:30–3:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • Make sure you have a good strum.

  • Add simple picking to your full strums.

  • Review/learn 5 simple tunes that sit entirely on the melody string.

  • Learn to play each tune pick-strum style in two octaves.

  • Convert these tunes to across-the-strings versions.

  • Introduction to “Whiskey Before Breakfast,” the tune I used to learn so much of what I now do to MANY tunes.

Week 2 – Tuesday, Nov 18 — 1:30–2:30 Central Time (USA) / 2:30–3:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • Master “Whiskey Before Breakfast.” (Sold strumming and picking. Clean fingering. Play in different octaves.)

  • Learn a minimal way to play melodies and simple chords at the same time. (This is easy to apply and remember to any tune in the future. Magic, really.)

  • Apply these chords to “Whiskey Before Breakfast.”

  • Introduction to “Arkansas Traveler.”

No Class – Tuesday, Nov 25 — Happy Thanksgiving!

Week 3 – Tuesday, Dec 2 — 1:30–2:30 Central Time (USA) / 2:30–3:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • Master “Arkansas Traveler,” the easy version and the challenging version.

  • Introduction to “Fisher’s Hornpipe.”

Week 4 – Tuesday, Dec 9 — 1:30–2:30 Central Time (USA) / 2:30–3:30 Eastern Time (USA)

  • MASTER “Fisher’s Hornpipe,” the easy version and the challenging version.
