Sue Carpenter - Following the Muse - Waltz for Katie and Harry
Sue Carpenter was my guest on Mountain Dulcimer Folk LIVE Monday, June 15, 2009, at 8PM CST / 9PM EST. We'll talked a bunch and I played some of her music including a couple tracks off her new recording. Sue's a great player. Don't miss this one!
Sue started playing the mountain dulcimer in 1981 and has been performing and teaching since 1982. When Sue Carpenter first played a mountain dulcimer she was immediately captivated by its simplicity and challenged by its fingerpicking possibilities. As an instrumentalist, she is best known for her expressive style and exceptional technical ability. She delights her audience and balances her repertoire with a wide range of...

"Larry Conger is a player and teacher of the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer. He makes his home in Paris, Tennessee, a small town halfway between Memphis and Nashville. There he operates a private music studio, teaching piano and guitar as well as mountain dulcimer. Larry is active as a participating artist for the Tennessee Arts Commission Arts In Education program and the Kentucky Arts Council Teacher Incentive Program, presenting...
Monday, June 1, 2009, I'll aired a one-hour prerecorded interview with Tull Glazener. "Tull has been sharing the music of the mountain dulcimer since 1984. He has performed and led workshops throughout the mid-west and south. Tull enjoys arranging aires, waltzes, ragtime, traditional, old-time, contemporary, classical, and jazz for the mountain dulcimer. Tull is also one of the performers on Susan Trump’s Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer, Vol. I. He has produced four recordings, is author of two instruction books, and has been a featured columnist for Dulcimer Player News."
On Monday, May 18, 2009, at 8PM CENTRAL / 9PM EASTERN, I interviewed and played the music of one of my favorite dulcimer players, Hollis Landrum.
"Hollis currently lives in Newnan, GA., and is a nationally recognized teacher and performer on the Appalachian mountain dulcimer. He won the National Mountain Dulcimer Championship in Winfield, KS, in 1997. His Swing Dulcimer CD is listed as an Editor's Choice in the Music Hound Essential Folk Album Guide. Dulcimer Player's News describes the CD as "astounding playing and arranging." He is also...
May 11, 2009, my guest was composer, songwriter, dulcimer player, virtual artist and sonic explorer JAN PULSFORD. We talked about her work with David Schnaufer, Cyndi Lauper, and me in the late 1990s. I was especially excited about some of Jan's newest releases including a good bit of Schnaufer music you haven't heard...
Tonight, Monday, May 4, 2009 at 8 PM CST, I interviewed and played the music of mountain dulcimer player and singer Linda Sack. Linda loves to play Old-Time, Old Country, Bluegrass, Celtic, and Classical. She plays baritone and standard. Having studied through the Blair School of Music in Nashville with dulcimer legend and dear friend David Schnaufer for 11 years, she's still in the ensemble he brought together and directed, the Nashville Dulcimer Quartet. She also plays in an...
Welcome dulcimer madman Butch Ross. Seriously, he's one of my all-time favorite players. We talked about where he's coming from, where he's headed, and listened to some tracks from his upcoming release, A Long Way from Shady Grove. Bring a friend and don't be late!
Nancy Johnson Barker was my guest on Mountain Dulcimer Folk LIVE, Monday, April 6, 2009. I talked with Nancy about her music, Kentucky Music Week, her Dulcimer Players News articles, and more. We listened to some of her latest music as well as some surprising tracks from the archive.
Nancy started playing the mountain dulcimer in 1962 by listening to Jean Ritchie records and trying to copy what she was hearing. Since then, she started the Louisville Dulcimer Society, Kentucky Music Weekend, Kentucky Music Week, and Kentucky Music Winter Weekend. She's put out a number of albums from 1973 to 2005 including Mellow Lady, Bridges, and one of my favorites, Angels of Mercy. Much of what we enjoy in the dulcimer world today we have Nancy to thank.
I talked with Lois Hornbostel about her latest projects, WCU Dulcimer Week, and a few other goodies. We listened to some of her music and took questions from listeners.
The DULCIMER PLAYERS NEWS has written: Lois Hornbostel enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the most influential mountain dulcimer performers, teachers and organizers in the country her instruction books and recordings of fiddle tunes, Irish tunes, and dulcimer duets, rounds and ensembles have been an inspiration to an entire generation of dulcimer players.
