CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Butch and I will occasionally record video summaries throughout the three days. You will get links to these videos once we've had a chance to edit and upload these videos to the web. This will make reviewing the material at home quite effective and should help you relax and enjoy taking the class.

Novice and Lower Intermediate

This class is geared towards beginners with some experience on up to those who are approaching intermediate. You'll have Stephen in the morning and Butch in the afternoon. Our main focus will be to use fun music and familiar tunes to teach good musicianship.

Stephen’s morning class:

Improve your ability to learn by listening, reading tablature, and reading hands. Learn how to make harder arrangements easier to play. Use easy tricks to make simple music fun to play and more interesting for a listener. Play backup chords for a singer or other lead player. We’ll cover the simplest method I’ve found for playing melodies and chords at the same time. I’ll also walk you through an introduction to fingerpicking and flat picking. Expect a good number of fiddle tunes and old-time songs.

Butch's afternoon class:

Learn to dissect the structure of fiddle tunes, and learn common musical motifs that seem to be in every jam song. Learn to properly simplify tricky tunes so you can keep up with more advanced players. Learn the one simple exercise that will make ALL songs easier to play (eventually). In addition, learn jam session survival skills through fun improvisational games and learn why “Boil Dem Cabbage” is the only song you really need to know.

Intermediate and Up

This class is for folks who have been playing for a number of years, have moved past the basics and want to generally dig deeper in regards to repertoire, styles, and technique. You'll have Butch in the morning and Stephen in the afternoon.

Stephen’s afternoon class:

After a brief review of the fundamentals, I’ll help you develop a more capable right hand in regards to strumming, flat picking, and fingerpicking. We’ll play melodies in multiple octaves as I show you a good number of tricks for making simple tunes fancy. We’ll cover bare-minimum and full chord-melody style, fingering strategies, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and a bunch of other stuff that makes music exciting for both the player and the audience. Tunes covered will be in the style of old-time, bluegrass, and Irish.

Butch's morning class:

After a brief review of the fundamentals, I’ll help you develop a more capable right hand in regards to strumming, flat-picking, and fingerpicking. Of course, Butch’s techniques are in some ways different than Stephen’s, so between these two teachers, you can expect a comprehensive right-hand education. As with Stephen’s class, we’ll also look at ways to “fancy up” simple tunes but this time with an eye towards treating the tune as an arrangement. We’ll also look at ideas individuals can add to jams or group performances that can add fun, interest and energy to performances.
