Join Jerry Rockwell and Stephen Seifert for a three-day mountain dulcimer intensive.  Dive deep and explore ways of playing with expression, variety, and mastering the techniques and mechanics that let musical ideas flow.

What to Expect

Specific practice routines for improving musicianship.
Left-hand technique..
Right-hand technique.
Time is built into the schedule for assisted practice. This is laid back time for everyone to let their mind and fingers review and process everything covered during the day. Jerry and Steve will be present to offer guidance and feedback.

More important than specific levels, this workshop is geared toward students interested in focusing on technique and musicianship. While new repertoire will be given out, that is not the focus of this three day intensive. Jerry and Steve will help you be a more confident and expressive musician.

From Jerry:

"Working with Stephen is always a joy, and I (Jerry) learn as much as the students in his workshops if I'm participating. The last series of workshops and concerts we did together was May 2008 all over Ohio, and everyone had a blast doing a bunch of air-strums to get a better handle on rhythm, working on some essential flatpicking techniques, and much more. Stephen is undoubtedly one of the very best teachers of the mountain dulcimer ever, so this is a great opportunity to work with him closely.

For my part of the instruction, I have been developing very easy-to-play group arrangements: Rounds, Jam-A-Rounds, Descending Scales, Simple Chord Progressions, and more. I have published these in my biweekly email newsletter (and now at my Patreon Page) for about 3 and 1/2 years. These are great fun and enjoyable for players at just about any ability or experience level, and they are getting better all the time as I hone my composing skills. I have had very successful and enjoyable classes at Kentucky Music Week using these arrangements.

My philosophy is all about maximizing your enjoyment and fun when you are playing, whether you are playing with a group or by yourself. Most of my group arrangements are designed to make a small group of dulcimers sound GREAT together, and they are very easy to play, so even if you are a beginner you can find a part to play.

The other activity that is fun for groups is a sing-a-long on well-known folk songs. Most of these have just three chords, and some have only two! It is amazing how much you can learn by just strumming along with the chords."

From Steve:

"I very much believe in Jerry's music, teaching, and building. We've talked for years about doing something like this and I'm glad to get the opportunity.

Jerry and I will be working together quite a bit these three days. For my part, I plan on sharing a bunch of tips and tricks regarding technique, theory, improvisation, reading/interpretation, and performance. I especially want to share a method of playing that's less dependent on repertoire and more about quality of expression.

More than anything, we want to spend A LOT of time playing. We don't want to talk you to death. Speak when necessary, but when in doubt, play good music!"
