2nd show better than 1st. Calm nerves before 3rd, went well. Tonight and tomorrow are big ones. Important to not over-practice. #dulcimer

Need Your Help Booking Whirlwind Dulcimer Club Tour for Sept. & Oct.

ky-oh-in-tour-2010

I've got a race to run and I'm hoping you can help. I need to book as many dulcimer club visits as possible in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana for September and October. (I'm interested in other states as well.) As much as is possible, I need to have something booked for EVERY DAY of the trip. (Weekdays are great.)

  • No group is too small.
  • I teach all levels, all tunings, and all techniques.
  • I'll provide a customized flier for the event.
  • I don't ask for guarantees.

If you think there's even a chance your group might be interested, please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call me at 615-829-6292.

I want to do workshops, private lessons, concerts, jams, and anything else you can come up with. The schedule can be as short as an hour or as long as an entire day or more.

Here's some of my latest workshops topics: (Want something special like early French dance music? Just let me know.)

Learn Like Grandpa Did
Learn in a do-as-I-do style that's very similar to what a lot of folks did in the old days. You don't need to have a great ear to take this class. It's mostly learn by-eye. We will cover about three Old-Time tunes, TAB included. You will leave with these tunes in your head and under your fingers. If you've had trouble in jams, this class will help.

Foundational Techniques for Beginning Dulcimer Players
Make sure you're ready to move to the next level of playing. We’ll cover stringing, tuning, stumming, fretting, and chording. I’ll give you some tips on developing good timing and memorizing tunes. You’ll also get some shortcuts to knowing all the chords you’ll need. Expect a fiddle tune and a hymn.

Introduction to Chord Melody Style
Begin the process of being able to put a chord with each melody note. We’ll start with one song that will GREATLY simplify your ability to play chord-melody style on all future songs. Scared of a bunch of numbers? I’ll show you the way around all that.

BluegrassTunes in A - DAD - Capo 4
Having both the 6 and the 6-and-a-half frets makes this capo position extremely versatile for the sophisticated sounds of Bluegrass and the Blues. We'll cover Black Mountain Rag and Maiden's Prayer. Included will be a bunch of tips on fingering and right-hand work.

Group Playing Techniques
Using familiar tunes, we will cover a number of techniques that enable players of any level to make beautiful, rich, and interesting music as an ensemble. Topics will include, Tips for Faster Tempos, Developing a Bare Bones Version as a Foundation, Integrating All Levels, Making the Right Hand Interesting, Playing in Three Octaves, For Advanced Players: How to Build Elaborately on the Bare Bones Foundation (If you're covering all the possibilities, you'll never get bored.)
